PROLOGUE
Until this day, the
origins of the fabled Book of Truths have never been known. A mysterious grimoire,
the Book of Truths was discovered during the year Charlemagne was crowned the
first Holy Roman Emperor in 800 AD. The finders of the book, two brothers by
the names of Vincent and Damien Vescovi, read an incantation aloud from its
pages. As they did, a change overtook them. The warmth from their bodies was
the first to drain away. Then their heartbeats slowed almost to a flutter. Their
skins paled, eyes glazed over in an alloy glow, and senses sharpened greatly. With
this transformation came one severe need that overwhelmed all others. A thirst
began to build where warmth once was. They became the first of a new species. The
Romans called them “strigoi.” Vampires.
Within the pages
of the book was a premonition. This premonition told of five humans who would
be born to a unique strand of the Vampire Virus. Human only until puberty, after
which time the virus would unleash itself and the curse within would spread
wildly throughout the body. These five were known as the Vampire Legends.
It is said that
each of the five Legends would develop a special ability, unique to that
specific individual. If fallen to a darker agenda, these five elites could be
used for the pursuit of evil.
As detailed in the
Book of Truths, the transformation of human to Legend incubated at birth. From
there, the progression of the virus depended on the individual maturity of its
host. Subtle at first, the human host would fail to recognize any changes. The
heart rate would increase, hearing, smell and sight would heighten, a
sensitivity to light in their eyes would develop, their muscle tissue would
tear and mend continuously and their taste buds would mutate. Once the virus
had reached the final twenty-four hour threshold, the Legend would experience a
type of pain unmatched by another. If the human host was not found by their
vampiric brethren by this time, the virus would fail to take and the Legend
would die.
The book also told
of the Collectors, vampires with the gift of precognition. Their visions were
explicit and essential to finding the Legends. Upon the birth of a Legend, two
occurrences would take place. The first was a blood red moon and the second was
a vision of the birth by all Collectors, which would lead the Collectors to the
location around the world of each Legend born.
The Book of Truths
told of a ritual that would guide those in search of a lost Legend. The Blood
Toast, as it was referred to in the book, became a nightly ceremony for the
Collectors. They recognize it today as the Collectors’ Toast. If on a night,
the blood within the Collectors’ chalices turned to dust, the transformation of
a Legend had initiated and the time limit to find the Legend was winding down.
Centuries passed
and time pushed ahead. With the progression of years, a rift formed between
Damien and his brother. Vincent had grown cruel in his archaic age. His lust
for blood was overshadowed by a new thirst. Power. He believed that humans were
inferior creatures that should be domesticated and farmed as a food supply
rather than move through life in the hierarchy of existence. Damien thought
different. He felt sympathy toward humanity and wished to feed only when
necessary and to do so on the sickly and dying.
During the search
for the third Legend, Vincent left his brother’s side in a fit of fury. He took
with him his most trusted underlings and began a covenant of his own. He filled
out the rest of his ranks with an army of humans he turned at random. Since
this time, Vincent and Damien have not spoken, yet their rival clans have
feuded habitually.
By December of
1902, the last of the five Vampire Legends was born in Brooklyn, New York. Twenty-three
years later, his ascension took place and the rite of the last Legend ended. Since
then, the five have worked side by side with Damien to continue a peaceful and
clandestine co-existence with mankind, counteracting the devious workings of
Vincent and his faction. To this day, the Collectors still gather in their
grand hall where the Collectors’ Toast is performed each night out of homage
and tradition.
On August 24th,
1989, decades after the last of the five Legends had been transformed, a baby
was born under a blood moon. Only one Collector had precognition of this event.
